## Local knowledge (Leichhardt specifics)
- **The defining local fact: the stormwater system here has a tide at the end of it.** The Hawthorne Canal, which runs through Lewisham, Summer Hill, Haberfield and Leichhardt, was not built as a drain. It began as a natural waterway called **Long Cove Creek**. In **January 1890** thirty men from the Harbours and Rivers Department began clearing the mangroves along its banks, and it was **straightened between 1895 and the early twentieth century** to manage flooding and enable land reclamation. It is now a **1.9km stormwater channel** and it is heritage-listed.
- It discharges into **Iron Cove**, which is tidal, so the level at the very bottom of the local stormwater system rises and falls twice a day.
- **The plumbing consequence, and the most useful thing to tell a Leichhardt resident: timing beats volume.** Rain arriving on a falling tide has plenty of head to work with.
